Strategies to Address the Linguistic, Academic, and Socio-Emotional Needs of Newcomers
Thursday, 2/23/2023, 2:25 - 3:15 p.m.
Meeting Room: B112
Schools play an essential role in helping newcomers adapt and contribute as they integrate into our communities and society at large. By understanding the socio-emotional, linguistic, and academic needs of newcomers and by learning how to create an asset-oriented welcoming environment, administrators and teachers enhance learning for not only the newcomer student, but for the entire learning community. We will promote an asset-based approach as we demonstrate effective strategies to address the linguistic, academic, and socio-emotional needs of newcomers. Participants will receive practical and engaging ideas that will foster students’ self-advocacy, self-management, and responsible decision-making.
Cross-Linguistic Foundational Skills: The Spanish-English Connection
Friday, 2/24/23, 4:10 - 5:30 p.m.
Meeting Room: B113
Explicit cross-linguistic instruction is an innovative approach to biliteracy based on most current research. Rather than assuming that cross-linguistic transfer will occur without explicit teaching, we can organize literacy and language instruction intentionally and strategically to promote biliteracy. Learn to organize, sequence, and allocate foundational skills to promote knowledge and language development in Spanish and English. Cross-linguistic transfer routines and strategies that can be implemented across the various biliteracy programs models will be demonstrated. Participants will learn to plan, allocate materials, create, and deliver cross-linguistic lessons. Join us for this interactive workshop on cross-linguistic instruction with biliteracy as an outcome.
